“Mental illness is invisible, but books give us the opportunity to describe it.
It’s in the shades of grey that wisdom lies.” Natasha Jade Devon MBE
Last year, I managed to find a strangely dear person from my army days on Facebook.
I don't think we counted as friends anymore because we weren't in contact for more than twenty years. And I lost that chance forever when I let my hesitation stopped me from saying hi to him there and then. Months later, he killed himself. He was a caring soul in the camp, and a well-loved friend to many on his Facebook. September 2019 marked the first anniversary of his death. I have been thinking about the silence of mental illnesses and how they escape our detection for years. In today's stressful life, we are all vulnerable to mental health problems. We need to talk about them but it is hard. Book are less intrusive for people to learn from the lived experience of others. As a bookseller, I can contribute to that conversation indirectly by providing access to books about mental health.
